WASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) hosted its second “Town Hall Screening” of the one-hour documentary “Cyprus Still Divided: A U.S. Foreign Policy Failure” at the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, New York University, New York City, on February 25, 2011.  The screening was held in cooperation with the Cyprus Federation of America.  More than 100 persons attended.

Former U.S. Congressman and President Emeritus of New York University Dr. John Brademas provided opening remarks.   He believed the documentary provided vindication for challenging the United States’ compliance of Turkey’s illegal invasion of Cyprus in 1974; a challenge that led to a U.S. arms embargo against Turkey.

A panel discussion featuring AHI Board Secretary Nicholas Karambelas, founding partner, Sfikas & Karambelas, LLP and contributor to the project, followed the documentary’s screening.  News Anchor and Journalist John Metaxas moderated the discussion.  AHI President Nick Larigakis welcomed the audience and thanked Panicos Papanicolaou, president, Cyprus Federation of America.  Republic of Cyprus’ Consul Koula Sophianou and Greece’s Consul Evangelos Kyriakides also attended.

“We thank the New York City community, and greater tri-state area, for supporting this event, and we deeply appreciated working in cooperation of the Cyprus Federation of America,” said Larigakis, who also praised Brademas and his former colleagues in the Congress who enacted the embargo against Turkey.  “The documentary sheds light and scrutinizes U.S. foreign policy toward Cyprus surrounding the 1974 Turkish invasion.  Our goal is to create awareness of the documentary’s significance and encourage communities to urge their PBS affiliates to air the program.”

AHI hosted its first “Town Hall Screening” for the documentary at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Clearwater, Fla., on February 7, 2011.

The documentary aired on Detroit Public Television on September 13, 2010.  The documentary was made possible by the support of the American Hellenic Institute Foundation.
