Greece has a long history with the West, serves as a key geopolitical asset for NATO, and is one of five alliance members that meets the alliance goal of spending two percent of GDP on security. 

NSA Souda Bay, on the Greek island of Crete, is the southernmost fighter base in NATO and is a designated Forward Operating Site, providing sustained support for deployed air and maritime operations to the United States, allies and partners. It is one of the few locations capable of hosting a permanently based aircraft carrier in the Eastern Mediterranean. Over 730 NATO and 2,100 U.S. Air Force planes used the 115th Combat Wing in 2015, and over 60 U.S. Navy ships, 4,000 U.S. Air Force aircraft, 69 NATO vessels and 996 NATO aircraft utilized NSA Souda Bay in 2014. Athens, Washington, and NATO should identify more synergies to work together and protect peace and commerce in the Mediterranean Sea.
